Esther learned detachment early in life, having lost her parents, her people, and even her name. She could have saved her own life but knew God’s promise for His people. Though afraid of losing her life, she summoned the courage to intercede for her people, perhaps a for shadowing the Virgin Mary interceding at the wedding of Cana, and also for us, her children. In the painting, Esther laments being torn from her people, but when she stands for and with her people, she feels she is one of them, her veil protects, encourages and strengthens them.
