She Trusted God In the Midst of Deep Depravity

This painting is a meditation on the moment when Jochebed, the mother of Moses, let go of the basket. Pharaoh fearing the growing population of the Hebrews, demanded the male babies drowned in the Nile River. With this imposition on top of the hardship and cruelty of living as slaves, Jochebed must have had tremendous faith and hope in God that her son might be spared. But she would have to sacrifice her son, give him up, to save his life.
This painting was the first of my Bible paintings as an adult. I had not ventured into this subject since elementary school. I was taking a studio class, with an instructor coming round to advise, answer questions, etc. When I told him my idea, I thought he would think I was crazy. I was wanting to paint something without any reference at all other than a very sketchy sketch. I had not studied anatomy for artists, nor done a landscape painting. (I mostly did still life paintings from magazines and photos till then). He was so encouraging and told me to go for it. I remember drawing in the figures and then doing the background reeds. After blocking in the figures, I added the dark blue water and dark skies, with a hint that dawn is coming soon. It seemed to me that Jochebed must have gone very early that fateful morning, in the dark, as she would not want to be seen nor caught by her slave masters. It must have been a huge risk, and I can imagine her heart racing and her worries about her baby crying. Her only daughter, Miriam, was at risk too. Yet, she succeeded. That moment when she let go of the basket must have been the most heart-wrenching moment of her life. But she is looking up at God. She believes her son is now in His Hands….and we all know how that ended.
